    I would like to offer sincere thanks to my immediate family to whom the book is dedicated. They have endured the process of writing, and more recently the content, with Mandela-esque courage and patience. Sugirtharajah have all in various ways, inspired and encouraged me. Participants on the Diploma and MA courses in Pastoral Studies at the University of Birmingham since April 1989, drawn from many nations, have sampled, criticized and been lumbered with much of the material here.
