I would like to offer sincere thanks to my immediate family to whom the book is dedicated. They have endured the process of writing, and more recently the content, with Mandela-esque courage and patience. Friends and colleagues Veronika Grüneisen, Jim Poling, David Augsburger, Ed Wimberly, Archie Smith, Stephen Pattison, Werner Ustorf and R.S. Sugirtharajah have all in various ways, inspired and encouraged me. Participants on the Diploma and MA courses in Pastoral Studies at the University of Birmingham since April 1989, drawn from many nations, have sampled, criticized and been lumbered with much of the material here. I am grateful for your insights. The International Council for Pastoral Care and Counselling and host nations for the congresses down through the years; the Association for Pastoral Care and Counselling (APCC); Race and Cultural Education in Counselling (RACE); divisions of the British Association for Counselling; Helmut Weiss of Rheinische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Klinische Seelsorgeausbildung; the African Association for Pastoral Studies and Counselling– all are worthy of mention. Under their auspices I have had opportunities to reflect with people from across the world who are con cerned about many of the issues raised in the book. Thanks also go to the Journal of Pastoral Care Publications, Inc., for permission to adapt Figures 4.1 and 4.2. Finally, heartfelt thanks to Judith Longman for continual encourage ment and to Ruth McCurry, Leilah Nadir, Miss F. McKenzie and the team at Cassell for the editorial work and production.
