Written over the past dozen years or so, these essays involve developments in which I have been personally involved as a participant. The organizing principle employed here reflects the intensity of this involvement, increasingly moving as the book progresses, from what is more general to what is the more autobiographically specific in relation to myself. After all, the book is not a general account of 20th century philosophizing but merely a sketch of some episodes in which I was in some way involved. One brief explanatory apology. In a few instances some redundancy in the discussion will be unavoidable where the same persons or issues recur in different and distinct contexts. Such repetition is the price of self contained readability. I am grateful to Estelle Burris for her able and efficient help in putting this material into publishable shape.enStudies in 20th Century PhilosophyBook
